Grandma’s Recipes: Homemade Stuffing
Grandma’s Homemade Stuffing Recipe (Classic Style)
Ingredients:
• 1 loaf of bread (white, wheat, or a mix; slightly stale works best)
• 1/2 cup butter (or more, to taste)
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 3 celery stalks, finely chopped
• 2-3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
• 1-2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
• 2 large eggs (optional for binding)
• 1 tsp poultry seasoning
• 1 tsp dried sage
• 1 tsp dried thyme
• 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
• 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, pecans, or raisins (optional for sweetness and crunch)
Instructions:
1. Prep the Bread:
• Tear or cut the bread into bite-sized cubes.
• Spread it out on a baking sheet and let it sit overnight to dry, or toast it lightly in a 300°F oven for 10-15 minutes.
2. Cook the Aromatics:
• In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
• Sauté the onions and celery until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add garlic if using and cook for another minute.
• Stir in poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
3. Mix the Stuffing:
• In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, and fresh parsley.
• Add chopped nuts or raisins if desired.
4. Moisten the Mixture:
• Gradually pour in the broth, a little at a time, until the bread is moist but not soggy. (You may not need all the broth.)
• If using eggs, beat them and mix them in at this stage for a more cohesive stuffing.
5. Bake the Stuffing:
• Preheat the oven to 350°F.
• Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and cover with foil.
6. Serve and Enjoy:
• Let the stuffing sit for 5 minutes before serving.
