But they didn’t ask for her full file. They asked for 2009 and forward only. Why 2009? Because that’s the one year a doctor floated Munchausen by Proxy — and the only year that theory ever appeared in her entire medical history. By cutting off everything before 2009, the defense conveniently erased the years that disproved their story. From 2005 to 2008, records from Dr. Steele and others showed a healthy teenager — walking, eating, developing normally. Those charts would have destroyed the image of a “sick child held captive.” So instead, they built a case on the narrowest window possible — the one year that helped them sell “abuse” and hide everything that came before it. "The Medicaid Flag They Couldn’t Ignore" In April 2012, Mercy Hospital issued a billing statement for Gypsy Rose Blanchard — two years after her care was supposedly moved from Springfield to Kansas City. The provider listed? Her longtime primary doctor, Dr. Steele — the same one who later admitted he met Gypsy in 2005 when she was fourteen. The bill shows a Medicaid denial code: “PX inconsistent with PAT.” That means the procedure code didn’t match the patient’s data — and that can happen when a treatment doesn’t line up with the age, gender, or diagnosis on file. In plain English: Medicaid caught something wrong with Gypsy’s records. This wasn’t just a typo. It was a flag — one that said, “this patient’s information doesn’t make sense.” In 2009, hospital staff noticed birth date discrepancies but stopped it internally. In 2013, the issue came up again with Power of Attorney forms. But this 2012 Mercy document? 👉 It’s the first time Medicaid itself caught the inconsistency. The question now: did they fix it… or cover it? Was this a new nurse entering the real date — or another correction buried?
